How to adapt to extreme weather events
The climate crisis is among the biggest concerns worldwide in the upcoming years, according to the Global Risks Report 2022, developed by the World Economic Forum.
Environmental issues lead the risk rankings that require urgent global action in the short, medium and long term, and are identified as the most severe. Mainly:
-Extreme weather events and
-Failure to take climate action,
This perception is not restricted to scientists, risk experts and world leaders: extreme events are happening increasingly more frequent every year.
In the face of this challenge, it is crucial to take measures that increase our climate resilience.
What are the impacts of the climate crisis
In 2021 alone, we have witnessed record temperatures and rainfall, historic floods, devastating fires and droughts, extremely destructive hurricanes and major marine storm surges, with human, economic and environmental impacts. And these are just the first signs of the climate crisis.
An analysis made by the Climate Action Tracker shows that the world's projected warming is expected to be 2.7°C by 2100, based on current government policies.
Even if we reach the most optimistic goals of limiting global warming to 1.5°C as outlined in the Paris Agreement, we will have to deal with many environmental problems and extreme events in the coming decades.
How technology can lessen the impacts of climate events
Besides actions focused on mitigating the climate crisis, new technologies are moving towards adaptation. An encouraging example is the significant reduction in mortality from environmental disasters due to the use of weather extremes and other hazards forecasts.
According to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Atlas of Mortality and Economic Losses from Weather, Climate and Water Extremes, the number of environmental disasters increased five-fold from 1970 to 2019, but thanks to improved alerts and disaster management, the number of deaths decreased almost three-fold in the same period.
A great result, nonetheless, these numbers still need to be reduced. It is not enough just knowing what will happen climatewise, but also where and how the impacts will take place at different scales. The scenario that presents itself requires proactivity and a shift from crisis management to risk management.
We are increasingly aware of the need to use impact and risk-based forecasting systems for the resilience of people, governments and companies to the impacts of climate volatilities on a daily basis – and that's exactly what we're working on.
How to adapt the coastal population to climate challenges
At i4sea, we believe that it is crucial to develop increasingly accurate, clear and accessible forecasts so that coastal residents and their organizations can anticipate and adapt to increasingly frequent extreme weather and sea events.
And this is not the reality of just a few locations, all countries and activities are expected to have access to high resolution sea and weather forecasts to respond to current and future climate challenges!
In this scenario of constant threats to climate safety, our mission is to help your business to stay one step ahead, adapt to the global climate change scenarios and the weather events of your daily activities, simplifying and supporting your decision-making process.
